Response to Bailey

Hey Bailey, surgery coming up on the 3rd? Exciting!!

I'm not sure I have much to say in response to your questions.

For instance, did my "lips thin out"? Um, no. If anything, they're fuller. Honestly my surgeon never mentioned them. I don't see much difference, and certainly NOT for the WORSE.

3 mm upper jaw advancement. Hmm. I believe mine was advanced 2 mm. Needless to say, everyone's case is different. Did it make my face shorter? Hell yeah. That combined with my lower jaw surgery - shortened my face by a whopping 9 mm.

Being able to close your lips without a conscious effort would be a good thing, don't you think? Has your surgeon indicated which option he favors?

The best thing I can share with you is this: relax. Trust that everything will go just as planned, and that you'll be THRILLED with the results. I recall being rolled into the operating room, scooting over onto the operating table, and passing out promptly, the instant my head hit the table (or maybe even before!). When I came to, it was all done! Voila! Nothing to it.

Oh - and eat what you enjoy while you still can. You'll be very hungry for the next few weeks. ;)

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Kristin, how does the picture profile composite work? Did you get to see one before orthodontics began, or only after? Or both?

Thanks so much for responding to my questions! I'm kinda leaning toward wanting both the upper and the lower. My surgeon seems to be saying that the surgery will be easier if I just have the lower and my face is nice as it is, so why mess with it. On the other hand, he says that if I want to close my mouth comfortably, I would need the upper surgery. I don't want my appearance to drastically change, but my face is on the long side, so I don't think I would mind if it is a bit shorter. Oh my -- decisions, decisions. The clock is ticking until Monday.

Thanks again for your response to my questions! I've been preparing for this surgery for over a year, and I've put so much into it, that I'm tending to think that I should just get it all done, and have a perfect bite.

Kristen, I forgot to mention that if you would like to see my pre-op photos, they are available here:

I'm really starting to lean toward both surgeries after seeing these photos. I still keep going back and forth, though. Sorry to litter your blog with all these comments. I'm just so nervous about the surgery and what decision to make.

Thanks again for everything!
