The Irony

Saw someone yesterday that I hadn't seen in almost a year and half.

"So you had jaw surgery. What did they do?"

"I don't want to tell you." I half-joked to avoid the gory details, and we moved on to other subjects.

Was telling a friend about this just now. She said, "You could just direct him to your blog." "Oh no, that's too personal." I responded, then laughed - "Too personal for someone I know to read, but not too personal for random strangers online who are also going through the same experience." Now THAT's ironic.

But you know what I mean.

Yes, that's exactly it. You summed it up perfectly. Sigh. Thanks Mary.

Hi Mary - yes, you summed it up just perfectly. Vulnerable. Anonymity shields you and makes you feel less exposed and vulnerable. That's exactly it!

The irony, of course, is that you're so public by having a blog--publicly anonymous. As soon as someone you know reads the blog, though, there goes your anonymity. You then have to explain your public side to your private friends and family--and who wants to do that? The anonymity allows us to say things or say them in a certain way that our friends and family aren't used to--perhaps they might feel there is another side of you that doesn't fit with their image of you. I don't know. I just prefer to keep the two things separate. I think that's quite normal, actually. There are some experiences that don't translate to our "real" lives, and are better kept in their own compartments. My sentiments are the same as yours.

that's funny that you wrote this.. a couple of days ago i was thinking about putting a link to my blog on my myspace.. but then i decided against it. i don't want all those people i know (including those who may have made fun of me in school) to see those weird up-close-and-personal pictures of my teeth and jaw... i just feel like they won't "get it." :)
